Kaurismäki kann es immer noch. Von allen seinen Filmen die ich gesehen habe, hat mir dieser sogar am besten gefallen. Die typisch melancholische Stimmung zieht sich durch den ganzen Film, untermalt von wunderbarem finnischem Country, Blues und Polka.
Wie immer bei Kaurismäki vermischen sich verschiedene Handlungsstränge. Ein Vertriebler für Hemden steigt aus und übernimmt ein Restaurant, das schon bessere Tage gesehen hat - mit Personal. Ein Flüchtling aus Syrien kommt als blinder Passagier in Finnland an und beantragt Asyl - das abgelehnt wird. Dezent Absurdes ist dabei an der Tagesordnung.
In diesem Film gibt es keine Zufälle. Jede Szene ist mit Farben, Licht und Schatten in Szene gesetzt, die spärlichen Dialoge präzise getimed, jeder Charakter schon fast einen eigenen Film wert. Manchmal wünsche ich mich in diesen Film hinein, möchte im Goldenen Krug sitzen und Sardinen essen.
Für mich bisher der beste Film dieser Berlinale, mit Abstand.
Kaurismäki is as good as he ever was. Of all the movies I've seen directed by him, I like this one best. The typical melancholic vibe carries through the whole movie, accompanied by a wonderful soundtrack made from finnisch country, blues and polka.
As always in Kaurismäkis movies, several lines of action are intertwined. A salesman for shirts discards his shirt business and starts a new life buying a restaurant that has seen better days - including the staff. A refugee from Syria travels as stowaway to Finland and seeks asylum - which is denied. Unobtrusive absurdness is observed everywhere.
Every scene is set out using color, light and shadows. The sparse conversation is timed precisely. Every character would make a seperate movie. Sometimes I wish myself into the movie, sitting in the Golden Jug, eating Sardines.
To me this is the best movie at this Berlinale so far.
